I am often asked about crime rates in Bulgaria and I relate the experience of one of our clients. She and her friend went out one evening in Varna and having visited several establishments, and being somewhat slightly the worse for wear, her friend left her handbag containing all her money, her passport, credit cards and personnel items on the seat in the last place, it also happened to contain a card for the hotel they were staying in. They got to the hotel and fell into bed, falling into a deep sleep not realising what had happened. At 5am in the morning they were wakened by the night porter banging on the door, a lady at the club had found the bag, and having seen the hotel card in there had taken a taxi to the hotel and just moments before left the handbag at reception to be returned. The surprising bit was this lady had then left refusing any reward whatsoever, or even payment for the taxi, and despite my clients and my best efforts we were unable to trace her to offer a payment. Can you imagine this happening in England because I certainly can’t, you would never have seen the bag again, let alone it’s contents complete and untouched.
